Gull Island Peace

We come out and anchor on a sliver of sand near Moriches Inlet called Gull Island a lot. Great spot, lots of clams, birds and breezes. Scored this shot of a seagull flyover over head, perhaps guarding his brood which inhabit the island.

Pelavin Gallery is proud to announce a group exhibition of gallery artists depicting their reflections on the metropolis. With this premise, this show seeks to present a collection of works which examine contemporary urban life and the future prospect of civilization. A variety of mediums will be shown—painting, photography, drawing and collage—and several gallery artists represented, including: Ivaylo Gueorgiev, Steven Katzman, Amy Park, Scott Pasfield, Bruce Richards and Mark Safan.

In his essay, Childe Harold's Pilgramage (1812-18), Lord Byron states: There is the moral of all human tales; 'Tis but the same rehearsal of the past. First freedom and then Glory—When that fails, wealth, vice, corruption—barbarism at last. And History, with all her volumes vast, hath but one page.

Throughout history, the metropolis has been represented in celebration for its significances and simultaneously in critique for its downfalls. This is recognizable in Thomas Cole’s series of paintings The Course of Empire (1833-36), which depicts the growth and fall of an imaginary city. Cole’s series of paintings reflect popular American sentiments of the times, by emphasizing the fear of ‘The Empire’ leading to gluttony and inevitable decay.

Contemporary daily media coverage suggests that our own culture struggles to balance itself between ‘The Consummation’ and ‘The Destruction’ of our own empire(s): Quake causes Haiti's palace to crumble—Haiti's middle class shaken into poverty… Afghan peace gathering continues despite Taliban attack… Toxic chemicals finding way into the womb… Anger gushes as BP gets bashed—BP's chief is apologetic… Kidnapped daughter found on Facebook… Russell Brand just wants to love you… Taxi driver ‘watched friend shot in face’… Mystery water creature biting kids…

Combining such subject matters as vandalism, found pornographic materials, architectural icons, sexualized advertisements, street riots and city sky-scapes, this exhibition attempts to document the celebration and simultaneous critique of urban life by providing a group of work that documents the natural and fabricated landscape of the contemporary metropolis, while also illuminating the injustices of the current social scene.

I must have been around 10 or so; had always known I was attracted to men and never felt anything negative about it, other than other boys in my crowd didn't share my feelings...at least outwardly. One day as my Mother and I were doing the dishes after a family lunch, she began to have "the Talk" with me -- Mother, of course, ran our home while Father was sweet, lovely, but weak. At any rate, she did the man/woman thing as she washed and I wiped plates. Then she said that there were women who were attracted to other women and men who were attracted to other men. "They are called 'homosexuals'", she said. And I remember as clearly as this morning gazing out the window into our small back yard, "Well, if there's a name for it, then I can't be the only one." It was that simple, that clear, that undramatic.

I came out to my family when I was about 16. They, of course, hauled me off to the psychiatrist. I went in first and had a lovely 15 minute conversation with him about me, my feelings, my fears, my sexuality, etc. Then he asked that I sit in the waiting room while he spoke privately with my parents. I went out; they went in. After about 30 minutes, they came out - he strolling, she storming - and home we went. Silence in the car, so after about 10 minutes I asked what The Good Doctor had said. Pause. "He said that he wanted to see us every week for at least 6 months, but that you didn't have to go back", my Father said.

The following day I called the office and asked to speak to the Doctor. He took my call. Asking him what had transpired and telling him that we arrived home and Mother had taken to her bed and not another word had been spoken about it, he said. "Well, Stephen, I told your parents that you were the most well-adjusted teenager and homosexual I've ever me, and that it was they who needed therapy to address and resolve their own conflicts about it."

And ever since, wherever, whenever, with whom ever, I've been myself. Solid. Confident. Frightened. Unsure. Definite. Strong. Kind. Lover. Fuck Buddy. Son. Brother. Friend. Never thinking it was necessary to be 'proud' since I am myself. It is all I've ever known and, with luck, all I will continue to be for a long, long time.

There are a million tales, examples, etc., but they all funnel back to the above. Early knowledge, early assurance, early truth, and a lifetime of being honest and true to the only one to whom I can or must: myself.

At 55, I feel younger, stronger and more confident -- prouder? -- than ever. Maybe I've managed to find a drop of wisdom somewhere along this road.

Big Falls State Park

Had no idea this was so close to the house, which is only about 20 minutes away. The falls are apparently the largest undammed cascade and gorge remaining on a major Vermont river. The river is the Missiquoi, which at this point flows north, soon entering Canada before turning southwest back into the state, eventually ending up in Lake Champlain. Beautiful, remote and easy to get to. Definitely will go back.

Apologies for the very long lapse. I have been hard at work getting my promo book designed and ready to pitch publishers next month. This morning I shot this little gem out across the house at dawn, looking east towards the William Floyd Estate. The colors reflecting off of the water were beautiful. Would love to see this printed large and up on a wall. I can lose myself in there.

The Grand Finale of the Project!

With Jonny, I finished the first phase of the project and have completed all 50 of America's states. Some interesting stats from the journey...120 shoots, 90 single guys, 28 couples & 2 triads. 160 people. 3 of those people have died. And gay men love their animals...I've also shot 34 dogs, 5 cats, 3 birds,1 horse, 1 cow and many, many goats. And Michael takes the prize as the most popular Gay name out there, with 9 men representing. Runners up Kevin and Paul each have 5 entries.

Here are the last pics from the Hawaiian adventure and one of the portraits I took of Jonny. I photographed him outside of his home, aka as a van, on a beautiful evening on a rocky coastline nort of Kona. Big thanks to him for helping me finish it so memorably. :)

Two Step Snorkeling

Jonny took us to Two Step, apparently one of the best places to snorkel on the big island. But honestly, a little touristy, cold and barren if u ask me. The best part of the morning here was the delicious breakfast that he cooked for us on his camping stove out on the rocks. The Pu'uhonua O Honaunau national historic park is in the distance with all the palm trees.

Kilauea Volcano

After the spectacular beach, we headed south to Hilo then beyond to Kilauea Volcano and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was pretty cool to see all the geothermal activity and surreal landscape. No spewing lava or glow after sunset, but it was amazing all the same. Loved the Japanese tourists in plastic ponchos and the moodiness the fog and mist provided.

Waipi'o Valley & Hi'ilawe Falls

The second day on Hawaii started with a trip to the Waipi'o Valley on the northeast coast of the windward (wet) side on the island. Since we had a Jeep and Jonny's knowledge, we waved and went past the guard and headed down the steep road to the valley's floor. It drops about 900 feet in one mile and is not for the faint at heart. I liked that I was driving.... Once we made it to the bottom, we parked along a dirt road and entered an unmarked trail, destination...Hi'ilawe Falls. The 1200' falls are Hawaii's largest and there's a large pool where u can swim under and climb the rocks behind the falls. Super cool. The hike up was not easy and Nick wished he had on more than flip flops for sure. But we made it and the reward was well worth it. There is very little chances of finding the falls if you didn't know where to go and I am so thankful we had Jonny to show us the way.

After the swim and hike back down we headed to the relatively empty beach at the mouth of valley and Jonny cooked an excellent seared tuna lunch with papaya for us. A hungry horse lumbered over looking for scraps, loved that. The beach and surrounding cliffs, valleys and waterfalls are all beyond scenic and I would say this ranks as the most beautiful beach I have ever been to. What an amazing place this is, definitely one not to miss when you go to the Big Island. The day was like out of a dream...

The Big Island & Jonny - Day 1

Moving onto the last of the islands, Hawaii proper, we flew from Maui to the Western and dry side of The Big Island and were greeted by Jonny at the airport with leis he had made himself. The Kona airport was open-air, all planes were greeted by roll up staircases and there were very few walls in the airport at all. It was very cool. He got us settled into our condo rental and we took off for the beach in the Jeep we rented.

He took us to a fairly secluded black lava beach north of Kona that had a few homes on it and attracted sea turtles, unbelievbly beautiful! He started the hike out by taking us for a swim in an underground fresh water lava tube known as the Queen's Bath, that was about 100 feet from the ocean. We climbed down a ladder into it and followed swimming behind Jonny and his flashlight, trying to avoid smashing into lava boulders. We made it back quite far and sat on some rocks. Then he turned out the light and we waited in complete darkness till our eyes adjusted and we could barely see a glow. Then he told us to find our way back in the dark. Wild.

We then walked along the beach of Kiholo Bay and took in the sights, including fresh water lagoons where the turtles hung out and saw an amazing sunset. Jonny is such an interesting guy who has lived very close to this land for the last ten years, you'll see more of him in the next few posts. He reminded me of John Locke on Lost both in looks and temperament. Perfect guide for Hawaii.

We spent the night back at the condo, Jonny cooked us an amazing meal, homemade ginger carrot lemongrass soup, sesame tuna ceviche and a beautiful salad. It was Nick's birthday and Jonny outdid himself. He finished it off with crystallized ginger and local vanilla fresh ice cream. A great birthday for Nick.

Maui Whale Watching and Snorkeling

Michael, one half of the couple that I shot on Maui, took Nick and me whale watching on a large catamaran, the Trilogy. The weather could have been better for sure, but it was still a great adventure, one that I felt for about 30 hours after we returned. I have decided that I really am better on land and prove it time and time again. A little ironic for a pisces. It was prime whale season and the humpbacks were ALL OVER. Amazing to have so many slapping and waving their tails and fins in the beautiful blue water. Not too many breached all day, but I did catch one rising out of the water and another shot of two tails out of the water at the same time. We snorkeled out at Molokini, a little horseshoe shaped island off shore and I used an underwater camera bag for the old 5d, but it was cumbersome and rather difficult to shoot. Need to get a little waterproof point and shoot for snorkeling, but I did manage to take some decent shots throughout the day. :)

Maui

Maui was the second island on our Hawaiian adventure. We flew over from Oahu on Hawaiian Air and onto Maui skirting along the many sugar cane fields that grow in the lowlying areas. We spent one great afternoon at Big & Little Beach, the few undeleveloped beaches on the island, another day whale watching and the final day doing the shoot with Michael & Bernard and exploring Haleakala Volcano. We finished the visit off with dinner in Kula, a sweet little mountain town about half way up the mountain. Beautiful! Whale watching pics to follow with a post all to their own.

Oahu

What a COMPLETE slacker in my posting. It has almost been a month! I have been busy working on the book, stories, edit and pulling it all together. Also went to Hawaii, which was the LAST state to visit for the project. Hard to believe I have been to all 50 states in two years. A GREAT feeling and accomplishment. And one well worth the effort. I think it will be awesome.

Anyway, here are scenics from the first part of our Hawaiian adventure which was Oahu. We stayed in the Waikiki section of Honolulu. A nice little hotel a few blocks from the beach, our room faced a canal and the mountains and was beautiful. We traveled to the eastern side of the island one day and headed north to shoot 19 year old Brian in the Kahana Valley, who grew up there surrounded by family just inside the park. That side of the island was lush and green and also where they shoot "Lost". One of these shots has the green mountainside that u can easily pick out from scenes on the show. The black island out in the water is Chinaman's Hat also nearby. The shots with the hotels are on the famous Waikiki Beach. We also hiked a trail at the southern part of the island to big cliffs overlooking the ocean and posed for shots on top of the rocks for my friend Derek.

It is the first time that Nick joined me on a shoot for the project and we combined a vacation with it. My schedule was way more relaxed than usual and as a result I took many a picture. Had a GREAT time with Nick and hope he can join me for more in the future. :) Btw, lots of clouds on the whole trip, but made for some great pics.

(Oct '08) I am a 38 year old gay man living my life out in Quincy, MA (one city south of Boston). I ended a 14 year relationship just two years ago that may be reuniting. I met my ex-partner just a few months after coming out and was quite comfortable with my life, in fact so comfortable that I gained quite a bit of weight. After some cheating issues we broke things off and I worked my ass off (literally) at the gym. I know that is typical for a gay man, but during the last two years I have had some family issues that have also changed my life dramatically. My sister moved to Mississippi and her two teenage sons were having some issues, and she needed help herself. They both are now living in my house and have been since about 6 months after my break-up. I have seen my life transformed. These two teenagers have been very supportive of my life and even helped me through what was a very tough time in my life. I now have one of them about to move out on his own, a big step for both him and I at this point. I have changed two young family members lives and at the same time regained my own.

I have been recently spending time with my ex in between being a “single gay soccer dad” and struggling with my job as a real estate agent in very tough economic times. As you can imagine it was a struggle to date again after such a long term relationship, and even more so with most gay men viewing the raising of two teenage boys as “baggage”. I am proud to have that “baggage” around me every day, and proud of what they have become. They experience a very large portion of my life and spend time with my friends who often help out when I am not available for them.

I recently took on the Harbor to Bay bike ride for HIV causes, a 126 mile ride from Boston to Provincetown. At 6:00am, the morning of the ride, as I prepared to pull out of Copley Square in Boston I received a text from the younger of the two boys wishing me luck and providing words of encouragement. He knew and understood what the ride meant to me, raising money for a good cause and a personal challenge. This has simply become a regular life to me at this point.

I am blessed to live in Massachusetts where being out is not a problem, even living in a small neighborhood filled with retired people in their 70’s. They have all embraced me, and in fact one of my neighbors recognized my weight loss after the break-up and was concerned and was bringing me meals (typical Italian mother). I am proud of who I am, and have experienced a lot recently. I don’t hide who I am and haven’t since I came out shortly after turning 21. I am also proud to provide an example and environment for my nephews that allows them to develop into who they are and will become. My friend suggested I was a very good candidate to show another side OUT in these times, and I am proud to represent another segment of being out as a gay man.

(Nov 09 update) I went to the hospital thinking I had some sort of stomach virus or kidney stones, left 7 days later having 14 inches of my intestines removed and my life completely changed with a colon cancer diagnosis. I had got back together with my ex before this happened and could not have made it through the last three weeks without him. He has been there every step of the way, so at least there was some good coming from him being laid off from work one week prior to this happening. I had even taken on a puppy last May that I was raising for Guiding Eyes for the Blind and he would have went in for training in March, but left early because of my situation. Again, so much for Karma and the belief that good things come to people who help others. However, I have tremendous support from so many people that it is overwhelming at times which helps me redeem that Karma belief (not a religious bone in my body otherwise).

Living in the Boston area has it's definite advantages, along with a very diverse and accepting community, it has incredible medical resources. I have picked a great doctor who specializes in my exact type of cancer. He has a team of people, including a surgeon who specializes in liver surgery, which will be my next step along with chemo therapy. Stage 4 Colon Cancer means that it spread, but I am lucky that it had not gone too far. I only have two tiny spots on my liver that need to be removed, and I am hoping that can be done without another huge scar. I know that I will overcome this new obstacle in my life, as I have so many other things. The last few years of my life have taught me so much, but nothing changes your perspective like this has!

Beautiful Winter Swan

Walking along the beach at dawn and sunrise is one of my favorite things about weekends in Mastic Beach. This morning was no exception. The swans were all sleeping when I started my walk, drifting out on the bay. Then one of them started to swim right towards me. I was thinking we were having a little moment when my neighbor and friend Lorraine came out from behind me with some food for the bird. No special bond it seemed, he just was hungry and knew where to butter his bread, so to speak. Such a beautiful moment, glad I was there with my camera. :o)

Reeeealy want to go check out the interiors soon and hang in the swanky bar up top, the Boom Boom Room. Sweet building. Go see it and bring binoculars, especially at night! LOL.

Vermont Snow Storm

The week up in Vt was perfect. It snowed the whole time we were there. About 3-4' I would say. It was a winter wonderland. My knee felt pretty good and I hit the slopes again for the first time since my accident last year. It was sooo great to be back on the mountain, in the trees and enjoying the powder. But slowly and with a bit more caution for sure. Here are some shots from the big storm over the weekend in and around Montgomery Center, all very close to the house.

Narrow Bay Holiday Swans

Another beautiful dawn down here at the beach. Cold and clear, a pair of swans were not spooked in the least and allowed me to photograph them close to shore. So idyllic, graceful and serene. I love the way the ice on the shoreline looks so surreal with those colors...super cool.

Just received copies of Georgia State's Law Magazine which has one of my photos on the cover of Bobby Lee Cook, aka the inspiration for "Matlock". Don't you just love his suit! He was such a great guy, interesting and full of charm. Took me and my assistant out for lunch afterwords to a local place on Main Street, where everyone seemed to know him. He is a star in that town.

When I was in Atlanta a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to find myself in midtown with a couple of hours to kill. It had been 20 years since I had been on the campus, so I took advantage of the situation and went for a walk. AMAZING to see such memories. The campus looked great, more the same than I had expected considering the Olympics. And I was lucky enough for there to be a football game going on at the time, which made for a surreal experience, crowd cheering and all. Here are a few images from that walk.

Man, am I loving this first shot, which I took in Chelsea on the newly opened Highline. Looks so timeless. And French for some reason... The second one is on the back side of Lucky Strike Bowling Alleys on the West Side near 42nd. Love the dirty sidewalk. And the last one is also in Chelsea and like the bowling alley shot, is some building right along the highway. The series continues to grow...

Black Cats

My friend Pauline has a love affair with black cats. She has had two for as long as I can remember, a male and female I believe that keep her amused. When my dog Kachina was getting older, Nick and I decided to get her a companion and ending up adopting a little black long haired kitten that we named Orlando. All was well, company had. About a year later at the beach house, a stray short haired black short haired cat adopted us out at the beach house and was waiting patiently every weekend for our arrival...and food. After a month of that, we decided to take her to the vet and lo and behold...pregnant. Welcome Ella to the family. So we put in a pet-door to the crawlspace so she would have a place to raise them, until we found homes for the kittens. Which we did. We were actually going to keep the alpha male of the litter, a very cool looking pure silver/gray with orange eyes and a stealth body. But he laid down and died at sixth months old for no apparent reason...which was very sad. Anyway, then we had two female black cats. Back and forth between NY, LI and VT. A couple of years go by, then another cat starts to stalk outside and laid on the charm thick. And was injured. Antibiotics for ten days. Nick names him Nico...crap, now three black cats! Never woulda thought. They go everywhere with us and travel pretty well. Here are two of them a couple of weeks ago when they wandered on set, Orlando on the left and Nico on the right. Meow.

Remembering September 11th

Hard to believe it was eight years ago. And there is still such a hole in the ground. My partner Nick always walked through the mall underneath the Towers at that time of the morning as he headed to work to American Express, which is the bldg on the right. He decided to go in late that morning, something I might add he never does, and was in the shower when the first one hit. I had just walked in from taking Kachina, the news was on and said "honey, you're not going to work today"... My heart goes out to those people that lost loved ones that day, especially my friend Kerry, who lost her sister. Tragic.

Seward, Alaska

The trip down to the coast led me to Seward, one of Alaska's main ports and fishing villages. I photographed a guy named Alex who works there seasonally in the summers. The town was really cool, although expensive, like most of Alaska. Here are a few shots from there, including the marina, the shops from a dock, the alehouse (a boy's gotta drink...), and the sun setting over some local homes. Really picturesque.

Driving on Highway 2 west from Libby, a rather bleak heavily timbered area in north western Montana, I entered an amazing canyon that the Kootenai River flows through. I stopped in two places that felt right, lumbered over the train tracks and found trails that went down to the river to these amazing views. I was in awe sitting there. So beautiful. The water was especially clear and you could see deep into it. The colors and place were very special. Can't wait to get up to Alaska. Just hope that the sun shines on me.

Whitefish Lake

Man, Whitefish is a cool little town. Amazing mountain range surrounding a 7 mile lake with a great ski area a few miles up the road. Glacier Park a short drive away. Great western covered sidewalk downtown. This is what Greg and Jon look out onto from their rental house on the lake. Click on it to see it bigger. You can see the ski trails up on the mountain. They are building a new home on ten acres up in the hills in a beautiful private setting now. Maybe we come in for a couple of days of skiing this winter. Would be nice to see in the snow.

After leaving Whitefish and having breakfast in Kalispell, I headed out of town towards Sandpoint and stopped along the way to photograph this beautiful horse ranch. The owner, Eve Rivers (yes, that was her name...great I think) was watering some newly planted trees and stopped to talk to me for a while after seeing me taking pics. She said she was a photographer and that I could get closer if I wanted. turns out in addition to all those horses, she also breeds yellow labs, specializing in a blockhead calm lineage. I think I found my next pup. The female pictured here is expected to have a litter around Christmas. How beautiful is this place? Meant to happen I think...

I was up in Vermont last week and shot these on the way to my friend Chip's house in Calais. This was before I wound up on a terrible back road that Google Maps recommended which caused some serious damage to the undercarriage and front frame. Bummer. But the trip sure was scenic, at least the early part before heading off piste. Anyway, these are all turnaround moments in a ten mile stretch around Eden, about 15 miles from the house. So beautiful.

Newfest Film Festival

In early June I set up shop and took portraits of people participating in NYC's lgbt film festival, known as Newfest. It celebrated its 23rd anniversary this year and screened some great new films. I worked out of the Logo Lounge aka The Cell across the street from the SVA Theater on 23rd St in an upstairs area that was private and had a cool chalkboard wall. Central Park Pool

Last Thursday I took a walk around the Pool in Central Park near the apartment for the first time in months. My recovering knee and the fact that I don't have a dog anymore are to blame. I really miss the early morning and evening walks that used to be a daily part of my life. But I am reluctant to get another dog until my life and work sort themselves out a bit. Anyway, here is a shot from the magical bridge at the end of the lake that spills over a waterfall before making it's way through the Loch and into the Harlem Meer. So beautiful.

Here's a shot of Laura Dern that I recently came across from a few years ago. It was an honor to not only meet her, but to get to photograph her. She seemed like such a great person and had very cool energy. I have loved her offbeat roles and acting since seeing her in Blue Velvet in 1986. She comes from acting royalty with Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd as parents and is now married to musician Ben Harper. No doubt their kids will be wicked talented and their own legacy will live on. Despite this shot being so close and revealing, I think we can see how honest and beautifully real she is. Not to mention that it looks like she hasn't had any work done, a rarity in Hollywood these days. Here's to you Laura and all of your success. I hope to see more of you on the big screen soon.

These are the tearsheets from the March cover story of the ABA Journal. They asked us to go in tight and to light dramatically, which was great. I traveled alone, found an assistant to help out in each place and set up a seamless in their offices. I really enjoyed this job and hope to do more for them. I love the design, text, layouts and shots they chose for these guys. Bobby Lee Cook, the last guy here, is my favorite. He was the lawyer that inspired the TV character "Matlock". Such a wonderful face. It belongs on money...

Little Boots in April's BlackBook

Here is a shot I recently did of one of the UK's new rising pop stars, Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots, for this month's BlackBook magazine. We had to shoot in the back of a new BMW and the creative director wanted a party feel. Trouble was the shoot was at noon outside the magazine's office on 19th street. I decided to light it all from inside the car with portable packs and take her for a ride, leaving the entourage behind. We went through the tunnel on Park Avenue and I had my shot. Her music is really quite good and people are calling her the new Kylie Minogue. Listen to her tunes on her myspace page.

Times Square Steps

I sit in Santa Fe this morning awaiting a workshop next week and was going through some recent personal pics and found some stuff from the new red stepped TKTS store in Times Square that are cool. I really do love this architectural structure/folly. It gives you such a great place to just chill and take in the great people watching and all the signage. It is made up of 27 steps and rises 16 feet high, housing the store underneath. Great interesting example of form following function. Perkins Eastman designed it based on a competition-winning concept by architects John Choi and Tai Ropiha. It opened in October and really has transformed the space. It will also be interesting to see how this is affected by Bloomberg's plan to turn this part of Broadway pedestrian-only in May. Times Square will basically become an urban park. Cool.

Living Legends of Law

Last month, I did a job for the ABA Journal, photographing lawyers for the March cover story "7 Over 70". The feature was about some of the nations top trial lawyers who are all over 70 and still practicing today. I shot Bernie Nussbaum in NY, Joe Jamail and Richard 'Racehorse' Haynes in Houston, Bobby Lee Cook in Summerville, GA and Jim Neal in Nashville. Some interesting facts about them: Bernie was Clinton's White House Counsel from '92-'93; Joe won the largest settlement ever awarded in the world (10.5 billion against Texaco); Bobby Lee Cook was the inspiration for the television series "Matlock"; Jim represented Elvis' doctor after his death and Jon Landis after the "Twilight Zone" helicopter deaths; and Racehorse has kept all of his 40 capitol punishment clients from dying. The articles are great and their stories fascinating. Check them out at the ABA Journal.

Here's some shots that I did last week of the multi-talented model, actor, producer and amazing figure skater, Emanuele Ancorini. We met years ago when I cast him in one of the Red Cross ads I shot that were all over city phone booths and airports. He was the guy that "didn't dress like you but would save your life in a heartbeat". When I came back from NC a couple of weeks ago I was greeted by two huge backlit posters from the campaign that are still running at Laguardia and figured it was trying to tell me something. Still makes me so happy to see those pictures in public making a difference. For these shots, I wanted to see what we could come up on the fly at his pad. We tried some stuff inside but that pink staircase in the hall was just calling out to me from the moment I got there and ultimately is where we ended up. He was such a pleasure to shoot and get to spend some time with. His girlfriend was in and out during the session and she is also an actress and model. When my leg heals, I think I'll plan a shoot with the two of them. NY, LA & Paris Classic Architecture

Some random architectural shots from three of my favorite cities, New York, Los Angeles and Paris. The first shot is of the exterior of the balconies on the residential building at 200 Central Park South in New York. It was designed by Wechsler & Schimenti and built in 1963. The building's design was described by Robert Stern as "a kind of aggressive, self-referential Modernism that had hitherto been largely absent from Manhattan." In my opinion, a great way for Seventh Avenue to meet Central Park. I love it. The second image looks out over Los Angeles from the Griffith Park Observatory on Mount Hollywood in the Cahuenga Hills. The building was finished in the mid thirties and houses a planetarium, exhibit space, a huge telescope and offers some of the best views of the city. Definitely check it out if you visit. And finally, the third shot is an interior view from one of the many salons in the Lourve. The museum is a city unto itself and when I lived in Paris, I would often visit. It is truly incredible and one could easily spend an entire vacation taking in not only the art, but the architecture of the buildings themselves, which I always preferred anyway.

I have really enjoyed how the photo editors over at Retna have found such great new images in my archive of work to syndicate. This shot of actor Anthony Ruivivar surfaced with a recent submission and I'm liking it. Anthony is most known for his role as Carlos Nieto on all six seasons of NBC's "Third Watch", which also starred his wife Yvonne Jung during the last two. I photographed them both a few years ago at The Village restaurant, on West 10th St in the city. A great looking guy for sure.

HIV Prevention Campaign

I had drinks last night with an old friend, who was the creative director behind a bunch of ads I did, including this campaign for NYC's Department of Health. The shot of the guys on the street with the umbrella was all over the city on subways and phone booths. Even after eight years, I still think these are such great images. Ironically, I believe that only one of these guys was actually gay. Go figure. Seems there's 'gay for pay' even in advertising...

Santa Fe is Calling...

In about a month, I'll be heading out to Santa Fe for my annual pilgrimage, a photo workshop and hopefully a few days of skiing. I really miss it out there, having called it home for about five years before I moved to NY in '96. I am so excited. Green chile breakfast burritos and margaritas are some of my favorite things... Here's a shot of Rulan, a local model and dancer, that puts me in the mood. It was taken a couple of years ago along the Rio Grande in Los Luceros, an old historic homestead, just north of Española between Santa Fe and Taos. Beautiful.

Been traveling, which is the cause for the break from posts, but having an amazing time meeting and photographing a bunch of lawyers for the ABA Journal, a new client that I'm loving, down in Houston, Nashville and Summerville, Georgia. These guys are living legends and the best litigators of our time, all of whom are around eighty and still working. I really took great interest in their lives, reading about their careers beforehand which served me well on the shoots. I'll post some shots when I'm able. In the meantime, here's another new moonscape that I made by dancing with a telephone pole between me and the ball in the sky.

Man on Wire

I took some pictures for my syndicator, Retna, during last years Tribeca Film Festival and shot the star and director of Man on Wire, the story of Philippe Petit's notorious tight rope walk between the Twin Towers in the 70's. I finally watched it last weekend up in VT with my partner and was blown away. A fantastic movie. Go rent it! It has the greatest pace to it and feels more like a thriller than a documentary. It is also such a celebration of the buildings and made me realize how much of a void our city still has without them. I had posted some of these shots before, but felt that since the movie was just nominated for the best documentary Oscar yesterday they deserved some more air time. Congratulations to both Philippe and James Marsh, the very talented director. I have a feeling that it will win.

Some shots from Thursday of Rich, a model and actor that I have been wanting to photograph since I met him a year ago at a friend's Christmas party, where he was the bartender. Seeing him again this year working the same gig, we decided to try and make it happen sooner than later and I went over to his pad to take some shots of him before he shaved off his beard. I went in tight and decided to show off his amazing face. I think I may start to shoot other male models in a similar fashion, at home, comfortable in their environment. Maybe a new project in the making...
