Rockon Platon!

I just got back from two weeks in New Mexico, where I took a week long workshop with the photographer Platon. I feel privileged. He is not only one of the best portrait shooters in the world, but also a great teacher and a super cool person. I have a new man crush. Check out his site, esp his Greek stuff... platonphoto.com Here are some of the shots I took from the week. We worked in his style photographing each other with only one light against white seamless paper. This was at the Santa Fe Photography Workshops, where I taught last year. I love that place. Reid, the director just told me that he wants me teaching again, which makes me smile. Here's a link to a post on their blog about my course last year... santafeworkshops.com

Nico Dude

In August another cat came out of the marsh at the beach house and would not leave. He saw a good thing and knew we were suckers. Now we have three black cats. This is the first day he came up to me. His body is so skinny here, it's amazing to see him today, as he has gained a lot of weight. I never would have thought I would have so many cats and be taking them between LI, VT and NY. Travelin' cat guy.

UT Terry Richardson Adscapes

Details from a series of UT ads posted on a construction site shot by Terry Richardson. The line going down Missy Rayder's face is a shadow made from the crease in the billboard paper makes me laugh. and then the other one with the hole in her cheek. My mind sees a lot in those blemishes.

Color Adscapes - Cloverfield Billboard, Times Square

Cool details from a billboard in Times Square last week. They have a cartoon quality about them that I really like. It's always been a challenge for me to get good color adscapes, easier instead to blend the billboard with reality by making both black and white.

Snowy Northeast Kingdom Moonscape

Pulled over and shot the moon in a dusky sky over a frozen snowy lake in the Northeast Kingdon of Upper VT coming home from a shoot. Here are a couple variations. Sweet.

Andy Cohen, SVP Programming and Production, Bravo

I just found out that my friend Joe Delate is the wardrobe stylist on Make Me a Supermodel. What a gig. I have been hooked since it went on the air. Andy, above is one of the executive producers on the show and a major force over at Bravo. He's also hosting those best of network specials for the channel. Andy also has a great blog here. I photographed him for a Red Cross campaign that I did in 2006 along with Chris Botti, Elisabeth Rohm and Bruce Bozzi. Nice guy. Would LOVE to be a guest photographer on one of his shows.

Signe, Fashion Stylist

Here's an old shot of my friend Signe, a fashion stylist here in New York, that I just love and recently came across. We grew up in the same town, Huntington, Long Island, but did not know each other until meeting on a shoot. Stunning beauty. Could model herself. Check out her work at signe-yberg.com. She is very talented.

Callie

Just found this overlooked shot from last march shot during Norman Jean Roy's workshop in Santa Fe and added it to my site. Love it. Awkward in a wonderful way and in your face. Makes me want to stare and look away at the same time. She also has a bit of a Bowie eye going on, not in color, but tone, her left iris has a very dark area that surrounds the pupil, which also adds to things. And that little gap in her upper lip. Beautiful. She works for Norman as his in-house retoucher in LA and is a very talented photographer herself. We'll definitely see more of her.

Amaryllis Details

Details of an amaryllis flower that is blooming now out in Mastic. Pretty. You know I should be doing other things when I start photographing flowers.

Patricia, American Express Executive

Another nice shot from my recent American Express shoot. I had a few of the executives sit on an apple box and try to lean forward on their knees, which resulted in both of these interesting shots. Patricia looks like a completely new woman since I photographed her last year. Something has put a spark in her eye.

Alan, American Express Executive

Here's a top American Express executive , who I photographed at the company's World Financial Center's 38th floor studio in New York City a couple of weeks ago with some of his peers. Great corporate portrait. So self-assured, confident, comfortable AND approachable.

Moonscape Smoke

Love these shots of the moon and its reflection on the water out on Long Island last weekend. I was able to capture the reflections in a new way that almost looks like smoke or brush strokes.

Crescent Moonscapes

I love the whole process of making these moon images. Very different than anything else I shoot. More painterly, abstract and just plain fun. Here are three shots from last night that I took across the street of the moon through the beach grass.

New Website!

I just redid my site and got rid of the overly designed flash intensive star spinning one. I opted for something much cleaner and simpler which lets the images speak for themselves without competition. Check it out if you can. Here we have the lovely Mizahn, a model from Santa Fe, who made the cut and is included in the portrait portfolio.

Mastic Beach Dawn

Man, hard to believe it's winter with this warm weather. What a beautiful dawn over the bay this morning. So peaceful at that time of day.

Kachina 11/25/93 - 12/13/07

With great sadness, I write to tell you of the passing of my dear companion and friend of fourteen years, my beloved Kachina, who on Thursday traded this life in for another. She has been suffering from old age and sore joints for some time and has been having an especially hard time this last year even getting up. But she had a great strength and will to live and wanted nothing more than to please her master and for life to go on as usual.

Feeling a need to head north, I decided to make an escape from the city on Monday to get in some great skiing on the unbelievable amount of snow that has fallen at our house in VT (already over 130 inches). So, I took Kachina and Orlando, one of our cats, and left Nick with Ella and Nico. I felt a very strong pull to go and there was no telling me otherwise, just ask Nick. I knew that when we got that house, it would be where Kachina would rest. And when I visited the vet up there earlier this year, I knew that that would be the spot she would die. Intuition is never wrong. I just did not expect it now.

I woke up on Thursday morning to take her out for her morning walk, but things were far from usual. It appeared that she had had a stroke, unable to stand, and fell to the one side when I tried to help her. She was pretty confused and panting heavily. When I called to speak to our long time great vet on LI, he had taken a leave of absence and they weren't sure when and if he was coming back...I believe he had said something about possibly moving to VT the last time we saw him. Funny. So I then called the local VT vet who told me about peripheral vestibular syndrome which is commonly mistaken for a stroke. They told me her eyes would be darting back and forth if I looked closely. Sure enough they were. It would not kill her, but she would not be able to walk for perhaps three weeks and she would probably never be the same. This was the clincher, something she did not want to go through and she let me know it was time. They had an opening at three, could I make it? I hesitantly said yes and scheduled my date with destiny. I was with her at the end, holding her, kissing her face and telling her how much I loved her. I would see her again I said, on the other side.

It was such an honor to have been her master. She had the absolute best soul and demeanor of any dog I have ever known. She will be greatly missed.

LA, NYC & Lake Placid

While I'm onto Dinner For Five, here's some images that I shot for the different show opens. The lights in motion became a strong design element that they used throughout the series in their graphics and marketing. The first image is one of the restaurants we shot in, Alto Palato in Los Angeles. The second is a close up of the 9-11 Memorial in New York City and the third is a 70's inspired zoom shot of the Palace Theater in Lake Placid, NY. I will try to post the actual opens on here soon.

Rosie Perez

I have worked with Rosie a few times. Not only on Dinner for Five, but also on the documentary Yo Soy Boricua, which was her directorial debut. Super smart and very sweet woman. This was shot at La Chanterelle in Tribeca.

NYC Red Tailed Hawk

This flew right at me as I sat at my desk uptown on Manhattan Avenue this morning, after spotting it perched on a fire escape across the courtyard. I had just grabbed my camera and low and behold it flew in for a closer look. Cool.

Isaac Mizrahi

I'll be posting some new portraits from Dinner for Five that I had previously overlooked. It's amazing how I missed these. Here's Isaac Mizrahi at the Algonquin Hotel in midtown. We had met at the Washington Square Park in the dog run when I was living at the studio years before.
